China’s three Rabbits – By Prof. Samitha Hettige

February, 13, 2023

As per the Chinese calendar 2023 is the year of the rabbit and rabbits were shown all over the world. However, the image of three-rabbits that can be found in China & in some other countries are considered as symbols of cultural exchanges between Great China & other civilizations during the prime of the ancient Silk Road. The image of three-rabbits, which dates back to the sixth century, have been found in Mogao, Dunhuang in northwestern Gansu (UNESCO World Heritage Site). According to historians the image later appeared in; Central & Western Asia (12th & 13th centuries), Egypt & Europe (between 13th & 16th centuries). Most notable locations are the church clocks in Germany & ceramic tiles in Britain. In most locations the three rabbits are well known on paintings, carved on coins, trays & even on metal objects. Some Iranian historians are of the view that this symbol endorses the strong bond which existed between the Chinese & Persian empires which were thriving civilizations long before Europe & USA gained momentum. Some historians even believe that the three-rabbits chasing each other in a circle probably symbolize the circle of life, fertility & death. Interestingly some Iranian historians believe that the animals’ concept has entered centuries old Iranian culture with the influence of the Chinese culture. As per Iranian beliefs rabbit symbolizes fertility, instability, swiftness, cleverness and social life.

In addition to Iran, Thurkiye (Turkey) which is experiencing social instability due to the earth quake few days ago is an ancient civilisation with links dating back approx 3200 years with the Chinese civilisation. The ancient Turkish animal calendar also has many similarities with the Chinese calendar. Some Turkish historians also believe that they are also passing the year of the rabbit. The Turkish culture believes rabbits as spiritual animals or messengers & believes in rabbit’s ability to stop wars, struggle against evils & giving birth to a child.

Egypt which has fought many wars throughout history also has old strong peaceful links with the Chinese civilisation. At present, Chinese companies have invested more than 50 billion USD constructing the mega city at the entrance of the Suez Canal as part of the Belt & Road. Some Egyptologists believe that wild rabbit resembles the verb “Wenin” (to happen) & see that as the reason for Egyptians drawing wild rabbits on their tombs as they admire rabbit’s cleverness, speed, intelligent big eyes, and cautious long ears. Some historians in Egypt also believe that the sign of rabbit is associated with “Osiris”, one of Egypt's most important deities, who was the god of the underworld & symbolized death, resurrection, & the cycle of Nile floods (which Egypt relied for agricultural fertility).

In Sri Lanka Osiris isn’t much known but the underworld seems to be active as murders are being reported often. Sri Lankans always refer to the rabbit which rested while competing with the tortoise. It is high time they wake up & run to make the country win.
