Coconut oil – Sri Lanka’s next opportunity in Japan

September, 11, 2014

The Japanese show much care and concern over their food habits. Since a Japanese scientist has discovered that coconut oil being used in the preparation of meals retards Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia – the Japanese are using more and more coconut oil in their food preparations, says Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Japan Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda.

Hence, Japan has opened as a new market to Sri Lankan coconut oil producers and exporters and the friendship of the Japanese with Sri Lanka is an added advantage towards this, adds Admiral Karannagoda.

“Coconut oil has become Japan’s latest need. A Japanese professor has discovered that two tablespoons full of coconut oil consumed per day could prevent Alzheimer’s disease during old age.

“Now most Japanese look to coconut oil. There is a great awakening among the Japanese on Sri Lanka. So, even though there are other countries producing coconut oil they prefer the Sri Lanka product,” the Admiral says.

Apart from a natural food, the demand for coconut oil has risen in Japan also as a natural ingredient in the production of cosmetics and beauty products.
