Colombo garbage to Puttalam? Sri Lanka Air Force Battaramulla camp to be shifted

October, 27, 2014

There are plans to take the garbage collected from Colombo and its suburbs to Orugodawatte and from there to transport it to Puttalam by rail in sealed containers for dumping at abandoned lime stone quarries, said Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Susil Premajayantha.

He said this process would take another few years and would not affect the area as this identified area in Puttalam is almost unpopulated. There is enough space in the abandoned quarries to dispose of the garbage for at least another 20 years.

While speaking at a pocket meeting after officially declaring the newly carpeted some two kilometre stretch of Udumulla Road in Battaramulla on Sunday evening, Minister Premajayantha said the Sri Lanka Air Force temporary camp adjoining the public market in Battaramulla would be relocated by end December this year and that plans are being formulated to construct a public market as well as the dire need of essential parking space at the Battaramulla town.

Battaramulla junction in particular faces serious parking problems now and this vehicle park at the proposed public market would ease this problem, said the Minister.

With the new multi-purpose high-rise building coming up, Battaramulla would face an influx of at least an additional 15,000 state employees since most government institutions like the Immigration & Emigration Department or passport office, the Department of Registrar of Persons (National Identity Cards) etc being relocated to this new building apart from the existing institutions.

The Battaramulla main road too is to be made a four lane highway to make access to the Colombo Outer Circular Highway easier, according to Minister Susil Premajayantha.
