The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) recorded a slight increase in its price indices today (27), with daily turnover successfully surpassing the Rs. 2 billion mark.
This upward movement coincided with a significant drop in global fuel prices reported on July 27, following a temporary easing of military tensions in the Middle East. Market observers have frequently noted a clear inverse correlation between global fuel prices and Colombo stock market indices since the onset of the Middle Eastern conflict; today’s performance provided further evidence of this trend as indices rose in response to falling oil costs.
The All Share Price Index (ASPI) showed strong momentum in the first hour of trading, gaining over 100 points. However, as the day progressed, the growth moderated, and the index closed with a gain of 14.48 points, ending at 21,187.22. Similarly, the S&P SL20 Index saw an increase of 6.18 points, closing the day's session at 5,948.74.
The total market turnover for the day reached Rs. 2.07 billion. A primary driver of this high turnover was John Keells Holdings, which saw shares worth Rs. 661 million exchanged, including crossings.
Several other major entities also made significant contributions to the daily turnover, with each surpassing the Rs. 100 million threshold:
