Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) has reached another defining milestone in its journey to transform Sri Lanka’s maritime sector by becoming the first container terminal at the Port of Colombo to achieve three internationally recognized ISO certifications simultaneously. The achievement strengthens CWIT’s position as a benchmark for modern port operations while reaffirming its commitment to delivering world-class services built on quality, sustainability and safety.
The terminal has been awarded certification for ISO G001 (Ǫuality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) under an Integrated Management System (IMS), demonstrating that its operations meet globally recognized standards across all three critical areas.
The milestone comes within a relatively short period after the commencement of operations, reflecting the strong governance framework and operational discipline established from the outset. As Sri Lanka’s first fully automated deep-water container terminal, CWIT has consistently focused on embedding international best practices, creating resilient systems and fostering a culture of accountability that supports long-term operational excellence.
Building Global Standards from Day One
From the beginning of its operational journey, CWIT has prioritized the development of robust management systems designed to ensure consistent service quality, responsible environmental practices and the highest standards of occupational health and safety. Rather than treating compliance as a regulatory requirement, the terminal has integrated these principles into every aspect of its operations.
The achievement further complements CWIT’s rapid growth trajectory. Within its first year of operations, the terminal became the fastest at the Port of Colombo to handle one million
TEUs, while recently strengthening its infrastructure with the arrival of the region’s tallest electric Ship-to-Shore cranes as part of its Phase 2 expansion. Together, these milestones demonstrate that operational growth and international standards can advance hand in hand.
A Culture of Excellence
Commenting on the achievement, Munish Kanwar, Chief Executive Officer of Colombo West International Terminal (Private) Limited, said the certifications represent far more than compliance with international standards.
"This milestone reffects our commitment to building a world-class terminal that not only delivers operational excellence but also upholds the highest standards of quality, environmental responsibility, and safety. These certifications demonstrate the culture, discipline, and dedication of our people, who remain the driving force behind CWIT’s success."
He noted that the Integrated Management System certification validates CWIT's commitment to global best practices, operational discipline, environmental stewardship and the highest standards of workplace safety. By embedding quality, sustainability and safety into the foundation of its operations, CWIT continues to align every aspect of the terminal with internationally recognized benchmarks while delivering greater value to customers, partners and stakeholders.

Driving Sustainable and Responsible Operations
Speaking on the significance of the certification, Lasanthika Wickramasinghe, Manager – Environment, Sustainability and Compliance, said the achievement reflects a collective commitment across the organization to building a responsible and future-ready workplace.
"Achieving these three ISO certifications is a reffection of the strong systems, disciplined processes and collaborative culture we have established across CWIT. Sustainability, environmental responsibility and the wellbeing of our people are integral to every decision we make. This milestone reinforces our commitment to continuous improvement while ensuring our operations meet the highest international standards."
She added that the Integrated Management System provides a strong platform for continuous improvement, enabling CWIT to strengthen operational resilience while supporting sustainable growth in the years ahead.
Strengthening Colombo’s Maritime Leadership
The triple ISO certification further enhances CWIT's role in strengthening the Port of Colombo's global competitiveness. Developed through a partnership between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited, John Keells Holdings PLC and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the USD 800 million terminal continues to invest in advanced automation, electrified equipment and sustainable infrastructure that support efficient cargo handling and reduced environmental impact.
As Phase 2 development progresses, CWIT remains focused on creating a future-ready maritime gateway capable of serving the world's largest container vessels while delivering faster turnaround times, safer workplaces and environmentally responsible operations.
The achievement also reflects the dedication and professionalism of every member of the CWIT team whose commitment has enabled the terminal to establish itself as one of the region's most advanced container terminals. By combining international standards with cutting-edge technology and a strong people-first culture, CWIT continues to redefine operational excellence while creating long-term value for Sri Lanka's maritime industry and the global shipping community.
