Depreciation of Rupee ups Sri Lanka’s debt burden

Sri Lanka’s total debt burden has increased by Rs. 186.6 billion due to the depreciation of the Sri Lankan Rupee as against the main foreign currencies, reveals a report by the Central bank of Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the Government borrowings which stood at 77.6 per cent of the GNP by end 2015, has recorded a growth of 79.3 per cent by end 2016.

Furthermore, while the total debts to be repaid by Sri Lanka stood at Rs. 9,387 billion by end 2016, this is a growth of 10.4 per cent increase when compared against the previous year.

Local borrowings to be repaid have increased by 7.7 per cent by Rs. 5,342 billion while foreign borrowings to be repaid have increased by 14.2 per cent to Rs. 4,046 billion during 2016.

The Central Bank 2016 report further indicates that 56.9 per cent from among the Governments total borrowings is domestic.
