Electric cars in Sri Lanka too will be cheaper

The electricity powered cars to be imported to Sri Lanka would also be cheaper, according to the Vehicle Importer’s Association of Sri Lanka.

This is due to the tax imposed on import of electric cars to Sri Lanka being reduced from 38 to 23 per cent through the Budget proposals for 2015.

In April this year, the Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association said the government is considering providing more concessions to the import of fully electrically operated vehicles with a view to drastically reducing Sri Lanka’s fuel imports.

The Association’s secretary Keerthi Gunawardene told AdaderanaBiz that they have high expectations that this step would be taken following their request to the Finance Ministry to popularize electrically operated vehicles in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association took a decision to popularize fully electrically operated vehicles in Sri Lanka and sought approval from the Finance Ministry.

The Association also requested that the opportunity to install the necessary equipment to charge the batteries of such vehicles be provided through 50 Ceypetco fuel stations island-wide.

“We can get these equipment from institutions in Japan. We requested the government to provide us with tax concessions for their import and install them at Ceypetco filling stations,” said Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association secretary Keerthi Gunawardene while expressing his views to AdaderanaBiz.

The tax reduction has been in response to such requests, it has been revealed.
