EXCLUSIVE: Issue over 20,000 metric tons of furnace oil from Abu Dhabi

June, 30, 2014

An issue has arisen about the quality of 20,000 metric tons of furnace oil imported from Abu Dhabi for the use of privately owned power generating plants.

When AdaderanaBiz.lk inquired from Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) chairman Sirisena Amarasekera, he said the discussions were being held with the private power generation plant owners regarding the quality of this stock of furnace oil and that in case they are prepared to accept the particular stock then there would not be any issues.

“This stock of furnace oil imported from Abu Dhabi cannot be considered inferior. There is only one level of change when compared to the fuel already being used by the power plants. We are discussion with the private power plant owners whether or not they are prepared to accept this stock of fuel. If they agree then accepting this stock of furnace oil would not be an issue,” said Sirisena.

The ship with this particular stock of furnace oil is already anchored in the Colombo port.

AdaderanaBiz.lk inquired from the CPC chairman in the face of allegations by petroleum trade unions that the country is faced with a shortage of fuel oil.

“We already have adequate stocks of furnace oil at the moment. But problems would arise only if the privately owned power generation plant owners refuse to accept this stock now at the Colombo port. If that happens the power plants have to be run on diesel,” added CPC chairman Sirisena Amarasekera.
