Historic victory caps off a landmark season driven by innovation, collective grit, and unity among Sri Lanka’s finest young rugby talent.
History was made as the Jaffna Bulls etched their name into Sri Lankan sports folklore, being crowned champions of the very first Next XV rugby tournament following a sensational, high-intensity performance in the Grand Final.
The championship victory marks the culmination of a groundbreaking campaign for the Bulls, whose pioneering approach, combining AI-driven draft selections, drone training analysis, and high-performance athlete care, translated into ultimate glory on the pitch.
The final clash against the Galle Lions, who were on an unbeaten streak, lived up to the occasion, featuring pace, discipline, and dramatic shifts in momentum.
From the opening whistle, the Bulls established dominance through their forward pack, standing strong in defence and then delivering clinical set-piece execution at the scrum and lineout. The tactical preparation paid off early as the Bulls controlled territory and broke through the defense with sharp, quick-phase play out wide.
The Bulls took charge early through patient build-up play and sharp game management from their leaders, pinning the opposition in their own half and converting pressure into crucial scoreboard points. In the closing minutes, the Bulls’ physical conditioning proved to be the differentiator. The team displayed remarkable composure under pressure, securing key turnovers and controlling the clock to seal a historic victory as the final whistle blew.
Reflecting on the victory, Dhovika Senevirathne, Co-owner of Jaffna Bulls, paid tribute to the relentless dedication across all levels of the organization:
"To be crowned the very first champion of the Next XV tournament is an incredible feeling, but more than anything, it is a validation of the effort put in behind the scenes. From our coaches to our recovery staff, management, and sponsors, everyone worked tirelessly with a single vision. Most of all, the boys gave everything on the field. They trusted the process, bought into our culture from day one, and delivered when it mattered most."
Beyond the trophy, the victory highlights the transformative impact of the Next XV tournament on youth rugby in Sri Lanka. Designed as a bridge between school-leaver rugby and high-performance environments, the tournament gave emerging talent a stage to test themselves at a higher level.
Crucially, the Bulls succeeded in taking players from traditional school rivalries across the island and forging them into a tight-knit family:
"This tournament is so important for the future of Sri Lankan rugby and for these young players," added Prad Navaratnam, Co-owner of Jaffna Bulls. "In Sri Lanka, school rugby rivalries are fierce and deeply rooted. But one of the proudest achievements of this season was watching boys from different rival schools come together under the Jaffna Bulls banner. They set those long-standing rivalries aside, backed each other like brothers, and played as one united team. That is what sport is truly about, and that unity is why we are champions today."
With the inaugural trophy secured, the Jaffna Bulls have established a new benchmark for franchise rugby in Sri Lanka, proving that data-led preparation, professional standards, and strong team culture are a winning formula.
