Kingswood College Kandy reaches ‘To the Summit…… United’

October, 18, 2014

The Scout Troop of Kingswood College, Kandy – the 2nd Kandy Scout Troop which was founded on 4th March 1914 – commemorates its Centenary with a four day series of mountain climbing events around the country from 23 to 26 October under the theme ‘To the Summit, United’.

The marked difference in this event is that they are open to the public which opens the door to anyone interested in mountain climbing to participate.

This theme well describes the direction of the Kingswood or the Randles’ Scouts – which is forward and upwards until the summit is reached.

Day 01 will be on 23 October with the opening ceremony and a Night Hike with the organizers having unique plans for the event. The hike will be to the Ambuluwawa tower and temple.

Day 02 will be the Survival Hike, Day 03 the Water Hike in the Mahaweli Ganga with the Girl Guides joining the events and on Day 04 will be the conclusion with the J.J.P. Dehigama Memorial Orienteering Competition, considered the oldest such competition in South Asia. It began in September 1985 as a commemorative competition following the death under tragic circumstances of a Kingswood Scout J.J.P. Dehigama in 1982.

The first Scout Troop of Kingswood College Kandy was established under the guidance of the founder principal L.E. Blaze and V.D. Paulraj became the first Scout Master.

The College formed its Cub Scout Troop in 1927 and both Scouts and Cubs participated at the ceremony to welcome the founder of the World Scout Movement, Lord Baden Powell when he visited then Ceylon in 1934 after Scouting was first started in Sri Lanka, then Ceylon in 1912 by F.G. Stevens at Christ Church College in Matale.

Rovering which began in the 1950s was reintroduced to Kandy in the early 1970s under the leadership of R.J. Pelpola who had produced the first BP or Baden Powell award to the College in 1972.
