Lanka-China economic ties no issue to India, says Dr. Swamy

India has no issues over China entering Sri Lankan markets. India too has China entering its markets. So there is no need for India to see China as a hostile power, said India’s Janatha Party leader and a leading member of the ruling Bharathiya Janatha Party, Dr. Subramanian Swamy while speaking to Adaderana.

Dr. Swamy added that Sri Lanka always consults India on most issues and in fact most of the projects in Sri Lanka, like the Hambantota harbor handled by the Chinese had been first offered to India. If India had not taken advantage of them then Sri Lanka cannot be blamed.

However, though India has certain issues with China it intends to resolve these in keeping with India’s national interests, said Dr. Subramanian Swamy.

On the Indo-Sri Lanka fishermen’s issue, Dr. Swamy said India’s fishery resources have all been exhausted due to reckless fishing methods. So, for the time being India needs some permit from the Sri Lankan government for its fishermen to engage in fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

“Sri Lanka has more fish than it can use. So, India and Sri Lanka need to come to some agreement, maybe for two to three years so that India could re-populate its maritime resources,” said Dr. Subramanian Swamy.
