A company linked to former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed’s family is reportedly to construct a Marina - a dock with moorings and supplies for yachts and small boats, with a hotel and other facilities for tourist cruise vessels in a section of the Beruwela harbour.

While speaking to AdaderanaBiz, Fisheries Resources Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that this investment proposal has been submitted to the Board of Investment and construction work would begin as soon as approval is granted.

This Marina is to be linked to international cruise vessel routes and this particular company linked to Mahathir Mohamed’s family has already constructed Marinas in Malaysia.

This Marina is to include a hotel and other necessary facilities.

Meanwhile, former chairman of Cey-Nor Foundation Limited Rohan Jayasinghe said that several foreign cruise vessels pass the southern coasts of Sri Lanka daily and that the island is yet to focus its attention on providing services like fuel and berthing facilities.
