Mobile phone connection out if not registered soon

June, 3, 2014

The deadline to register a person’s mobile telephone under his or her name is due to expire soon and the connections of any such unregistered mobile telephones would be disconnected, announced the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

TRC head Anusha Pelpita told AdaderanaBiz that telecommunications providers were currently raising awareness regarding this issue among their subscribers through newspaper advertisements and that the TRC would begin an awareness programme as soon as this campaign ends.

Even after this awareness campaign if the mobile telephone user does not register the phone under his or her name then the particular connection would be disconnected, Anusha Pelpita told AdaderanaBiz.

“Telecommunications providers face a huge revenue loss due to foreign calls into Sri Lanka using illegal sim cards. Similarly, it has become increasingly difficult to know details of crimes committed while using sim cards in other individuals’ names. If a mobile telephone connection is registered under the user’s name these problems could be averted,” said Anusha Pelpita.

A mobile telephone user’s accuracy of registration could be confirmed by dialing #132#

If the details of registration are incorrect the person could visit the customer service centre of the particular telecommunications provider, provide the correct details and register the connection, state the service providers.
