Nippon Paint Lanka are sponsors of the inaugural Lions 7’s Kabaddi Championship 2023. The tournament organized by the Piliyandala Kabaddi Sports Club will feature top talent in Sri Lanka with teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Police competing alongside newcomers. The event is expected to take place on the 29^th & 30^th of April Day & Night at the Piliyandala Somaweera Chandrasiri Ground.

Announcing the sponsorship, Nemantha Abeysinghe, General Manager of Nippon Paint Lanka said, “We are very happy to be the main sponsor of the Lions 7’s Kabaddi Championship 2023. It is a great initiative by the Piliyandala Kabaddi Sports Club and will give the sport a great boost in Sri Lanka.”

Kabaddi is a contact team sport popular in South Asia. With roots in ancient India, it became a popular competitive sport in the 20th century. It is also the national sport of Bangladesh. There are two major disciplines of Kabaddi; one called Punjabi Kabaddi is also referred to as ‘circle style’. It comprises traditional forms of the sport played on a circular field outdoors. The ‘standard style’ Kabaddi played on a rectangular court indoors, is what is played in major professional leagues and international competitions such as the Asian Games.

“The tournament will be played at three levels. The Super League Championship will be played by teams of the tri-forces and the Police,” Abeysinghe said. The “A” Division Championship will feature the “A” Division University teams and the Tri-forces and all other teams.  Those under 20-years of age will also be playing. They will consist of players in the national groups and those that have not national level tournaments. There will be male and female teams vying for the championship.”
