Pakistan awards Scholarship to 83 brilliant Sri Lankan Students including 12 promising Journalists

The Government of Pakistan through its High Commission in Sri Lanka has awarded SL Rs 2 Million worth of educational scholarships to 71 students of O/L and A/L and 12 promising working journalists under the second Phase of Jinnah Scholarship Programme 2014.

The ceremony to award Jinnah Educational Scholarship 2014 was held at Ananda College, Colombo under the auspices of the High Commission of Pakistan.

The Senior Minister of Urban Affairs, Hon. A. H. M. Fowzie was the Chief Guest on the occasion, which was also graced by the High Commissioner of Pakistan in Sri Lanka HE Maj Gen Qasim Qureshi. The event was also attended by a large number of students and their families along with Pakistan High Commission officials, dignitaries and a large section of media.

The first phase of award of scholarships was held on 5th June 2014 at Jinnah Hall, Kandy in which SL Rs 1.7 Million worth of educational scholarships were offered to 69 bright students.

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of a strict criteria involving merit and need for financial assistance. Under this programme, each successful student receives stipend of SL Rs. 24,000 as assistance for one year to follow their studies.

A unique feature of this year’s scholarships was the award of scholarships to 12 promising working journalists for pursuing 1 year diploma programme in Journalism from Colombo University. The journalists selected for the award of scholarships were selected on the recommendations of the Colombo University.

The Government of Pakistan is awarding Jinnah Educational Scholarships since 2005 and so far thousands of deserving students have benefited from this scheme. During the past 7 years over Rs. 37 million worth of scholarships have been awarded for promoting the Sri Lankan youth and the education sector in Sri Lanka.

In addition to Jinnah Educational Scholarships, every year Government of Pakistan offers fully funded scholarships in Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy and Dentistry to Sri Lankan students to pursue higher professional education in Pakistan.
