SMS, Web lottery to revolutionize Sri Lanka’s lottery market soon

EXCLUSIVE: The Lotteries Board is preparing to enter the mobile phone and internet market before the end of this year by introducing Short Message Service (SMS) and Web lottery to the local market.

While commenting on this, Lotteries Board chairman Chaminda Athuluwage told AdaderanaBiz.lk that the proposal to introduce these lotteries have been already forwarded to the Finance Ministry and that it would be put forward for Cabinet approval shortly.

The chairman of the Lotteries Board said that he believes these SMS and Web lotteries could be introduced to Sri Lanka around December this year after obtaining Cabinet approval.

“We will choose a local company for the necessary technology to introduce this lottery. The Web lottery we propose to introduce is for Sri Lankans living overseas. The SMS lottery would be for those within the island,” Athuluwage added further.

The highest income recorded by the Lotteries Board was last year, which was Rs. 15 billion. Though the Board’s profits rose by 22 percent last year, its profits dipped due to its expenses increasing by 25 percent.
