Some PC candidates spent nearly Rs. One hundred million each

It has been revealed that several candidates at the just concluded Western and Southern Provincial Council elections had spent over Rs. 50 million for their election campaigns.

While this was disclosed during analytical discussions AdaderanaBiz had with several prominent candidates who had contested and won the election, they also stated that there could be situations where some candidates could be believed to have spent nearly Rs. 100 million on their campaigns.

Advertisements over television, the print media, radio and the internet, meals, liquor and transport for their supporters, display of cut-outs and posters are some included in these expenses.

These discussions revealed that nearly 15 candidates at the just concluded Western Provincial Council election may have spent more than Rs. 50 million.

It also showed that candidates who had spent nearly Rs. 50 million in the Southern Province is far less than in the Western Province.

This reveals that the election expenditure shows the economic strength of the Western Province which provides nearly half of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Meanwhile, most candidates who had spent huge amounts on their campaigns have won at the elections.
