Sri Lanka to set up a Monitoring Mechanism to Check conversion of Exporter Dollar earnings

October, 8, 2018

Sri Lanka’s Central Bank (CBSL) Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy had told reporters recently that Sri Lanka will set up a monitoring mechanism to check if exporters are bringing earnings back to the country.

"What we can do is put in place a monitoring system which we are hoping to do with the help of the Customs to know whether the money is coming back into the country," Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy told reporters adding that then exporters have to convert the Dollars in to Sri Lankan rupees.

He had further added that country’s financial regulator Central Bank suffered the second consecutive run in 2018 sending the rupee tumbling.

Reports highlighted that CBSL Governor’s comments came as a response to a question from reporters whether the Central Bank is worried about exporters not converting earned dollars to rupees.
