Sri Lankan Premier’s attention drawn towards hybrid vehicle tax

February, 10, 2015

The Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association has appealed to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe not to impose the tax proposed by the interim budget, as it is, on the hybrid vehicles on which letters of credit have been opened before 29 January.

A special discussion on this issue is scheduled to be held with the Prime Minister on 12 February, said a spokesman for the Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers’ Association.

“We only request that the concessions offered to individual hybrid vehicle importers to be offered those hybrid vehicles to which letters of credit have been opened before 29 January as well. If not, the increase in this tax cannot be borne by us,” the spokesman said.

The new government increased the tax on hybrid vehicles and expects to obtain a revenue of Rs. 07 billion through this.
