Sri Lanka’s first zero-waste organic, natural grocery store launched

February, 24, 2020

Green Care organic together with JustGoodness converted Sri Lanka’s first 100% Organic Super Store in Colombo 5 to become Sri Lanka’s first and only zero-waste store on February 15, 2020 onward.

Green Care not only provides 100% organic produce but pledges to support community livelihoods, with both Founders describing the store as a community market “where people and food matter.” Making a positive impact on the communities and stakeholders of Green Care.

The addition of the new concept of the store encourages customers to bring their own baskets, jars and containers to retrieve consumer items, as the outlet will no longer utilise plastics or polythene packaging. In addition, a plastic free home subscription model was launched for customers to conveniently have a weekly or monthly box delivered to their doorstep of all their monthly essentials including organic produce, biodegradable laundry powder, all natural shampoos, hand wash and dish wash.

Speaking with Founder, Green Care Organic - Nilani Rathnayake, on the launch “It is important for our brand and the greater global community that we convert to sustainably smarter consumerism. In the same way it is important that our products don’t come in plastic packaging, as such our store provides direct alternatives so that consumers can have eco-friendlier and healthier products without plastics.”

Concluding Director, Just Goodness - Shehani Rasaputra adds “The principles of the Zero Waste Store is not limited to a no plastic policy. As a Mom, juggling a business and a family, trying to be sustainable and avoid harmful chemicals, shopping was a constant struggle. We wanted to create a safe haven for the conscious consumer where products have no plastic and are non toxic to the environment and the people that use them. It's a holistic concept that aims to support families on their healthy lifestyle journey whether that's buying produce with no harmful chemicals, helping reuse utensils that are already in their homes, or reduce the amount of plastic brought into their homes.”

The partnership between Green Care Organic and JustGoodness comes at a time where the legislature and local societal mindsets are changing to ensure sustainable measures of retail consumerism.

Green Care Organic initially began in 2016, with the intention of supporting the green society, showcasing and promoting their produce. Since then they have amassed a strong following and have become ‘Participatory Guarantee System’ (PGS) certified for organic food. Green Care carries a variety of locally grown produce.
