What is sustainability?

In the year 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission described sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

As we are aware, since of late we had noticed many catastrophes caused by the climate change around the world. Some to mention are the heatwaves across Europe, water bodies drying up around the world, and New York City’s air pollution which was caused by Canada wildfire smoke. And not to forget that El Nino is around the corner too.

In today’s technological world more and more people are becoming aware of the ongoing climate change, and are considering sustainable brands. Being sustainable is not only good for the planet but good for biodiversity as well. Many countries have set net-zero targets and are working towards that. A few countries have reached net zero emissions.

The importance of language in a pacing world is vital to secure successful business relationships around the globe. The demand for Business English has been increasing for over a decade now. The Ceylon Institute Of English & Leadership (CIOEL), an online training institution, offers programmes which are purely skills based. One is called ‘Business English Leadership Programme’ where students get an understanding of the importance of corporate communication, drafting of professional emails, letters, memos, presentations, etc. And the other one is called ‘Leadership & Sustainability Programme’ where it focuses on teamwork, importance of cultures, sustainability in business, etc.

CIOEL also, hosts a leadership and sustainability podcast show with leaders from all over the world, which are available on YouTube, Google Podcasts and other platforms. Recently the CEO, Watson Michael hosted two guests, the co-authors of a bestseller called ‘Practical Sustainability: Circular Commerce, Smarter Spaces, and Happier Humans’. One was Jeff Kavanaugh, Chief Learner & Sharer of Infosys Knowledge Institute, the thought leadership unit of Infosys, an Adjunct Professor of the University of Texas at Dallas, Speaker (WEF, UN & others), and has been featured in the Harvard Business Review. The other was Corey Glickman, VP-Global Head Sustainability and Design Consulting Services at Infosys, Named among the Top 100 Influential Designers of the Decade, and Advisor USDOE Cradle to Commerce Program.
