The Cauldron Marks Nine-Year Milestone, Enters Next Phase of Thoughtful Expansion

July, 17, 2026

The Cauldron, the café that helped bring Pol Roti Koththu into Colombo’s café culture, celebrates its ninth anniversary this year, reflecting on a journey shaped not by rapid expansion, but by steady, intentional progress.

Founded nine years ago by a husband-and-wife team, CAULDRON & Co. began with a simple idea: to create genuine experiences through quality coffee, honest food, and warm, consistent hospitality. From the outset, the focus was never on becoming the biggest name in the market, but on doing the small things well, every single day.

Over the years, the business has grown through thousands of incremental decisions rather than dramatic leaps. Refining recipes, improving service, training team members, and responding to challenges one step at a time have all contributed to shaping what The Cauldron is today.

That steady philosophy has carried the brand through some of the most testing periods for the hospitality industry, including economic uncertainty and shifting consumer behaviour. Through it all, the approach remained unchanged: keep things simple, stay grounded, and prioritise quality over everything else.

“We’ve resisted the temptation to chase every trend or expand before we were ready,” the founders said. “Instead, we invested in our people, refined our craft, and stayed true to what mattered most. Every year has left us stronger than the last.”

A significant part of that strength, they note, has come from the people behind the brand. The consistency and loyalty of the team has played a quiet but critical role in both survival and growth, helping sustain standards and culture through changing times.

Now, as The Cauldron reaches its ninth year in October, the company is preparing for its next chapter. Over the coming months, it will expand beyond its café roots through strengthened capabilities in coffee roasting under Ground Theory Coffee Roasters, alongside the development of an artisan baking division.

These are not new interests, but long-held passions now being scaled with intention.

“With customers across retail and wholesale who value quality, we’re excited to offer freshly roasted Sri Lankan coffee to a wider market,” the founders added. “Our bakery division is also being developed to scale production, from everyday favourites to more unique creations under a new brand we’ve been quietly conceptualizing over the past year.”

As the business grows, the guiding principles remain unchanged: authenticity, quality, and restraint.

“As we scale, one thing will not change. Growth should never come at the expense of what we stand for. We will continue to build carefully, invest thoughtfully, and create experiences people genuinely connect with.”

Nine years on, The Cauldron’s story is not one of overnight success, but of patience, resilience, and quiet persistence. The first chapter was about learning how to endure. The next is about growing with purpose.
