Trade union calls off strike at Sri Lanka’s international airport

November, 5, 2014

The ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) affiliated trade union strike action at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has been called off following discussions with the authorities. Operations are to resume shortly.

Earlier today (05 November) the trade union members resorted to a strike action claiming that several rounds of talks with the authorities on several issues had failed. Outbound flights were mainly affected whereas inbound flights operated as usual.

However, most activities at the premier airport in Sri Lanka were crippled since the striking employees had switched off the electricity supply.

Airport and aviation trade union head N.W.B. Muhandiram said earlier that their demands are to increase their wages by Rs. 10,000, to streamline their health insurance scheme, provide loan facilities to the employees, removal of the security head at the airport and provide a rest room for the employees.
