Women bear more weight in the country’s economy: BOI Director General Renuka M. Weerakoon

International Women's Day is not just another day of celebration, it is a day of appreciation for the strength, resilience, and achievements of women across various fields, and on this day celebrating the achievements of women globally, the Sri Lanka Board of Investment Director General said that women in this country are making an incredible contribution to Sri Lanka's economic development. In this auspicious occasion, we recognize the contribution and celebrate with pride.

Mrs. Weerakoon while delivering the guest speech at the International Women's Day celebration held on 14th March in the Sithawaka Export Processing Zone of the Sri Lanka Board of Investment.

Mrs. Weerakoon, who further commented, said that the theme of the International Women's Day 2024 program is “Inspire Inclusion”. It is aimed at "creating an environment where all women are valued and given due respect by working to break down barriers and monotonous challenges". According to the statistics of our country, although the direct contribution of women to Sri Lanka's economy is about 33%, their indirect contribution is more than that. We know that.

Women are a resource that provides great strength to the economy. In particular, women have been able to fulfill their responsibilities at work without compromising their family responsibilities. Women also have the heavy responsibility of creating a better future by directing their children to the right path.

The Director General said that today's woman has made education her most precious jewel, and a woman with a strong educational foundation will not waver in the face of any challenge with an “Indomitable Spirit” and work to become an updated woman in and outside of her career as well as armed with knowledge.

Prizes were awarded to the winners of the contests of singing, dancing, prose, poetry, art, dance, and dancing among the employees of the factories in the Sitawaka Export Processing Zone.
