Zhang Yiming Becomes Asia’s Richest Person Driven by ByteDance’s AI Surge

September, 17, 2026

Zhang Yiming, the 43-year-old founder of TikTok parent company ByteDance, has officially become Asia's wealthiest individual with a net worth surpassing $105 billion. His personal fortune climbed by more than $12 billion in a single month following upward valuation markups from major financial institutions, including BlackRock, Fidelity, and T. Rowe Price. These updated private valuations reflect a 10% risk discount applied due to ByteDance's status as a privately held firm.

This milestone represents a more than eightfold increase from March 2019, when Zhang's disclosed assets stood at $13 billion. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Zhang's rise to the top spot saw him overtake India's Gautam Adani of the Adani Group. Adani’s fortune, which peaked at $120 billion in June, subsequently declined due to broad market selling pressure tied to MSCI index rebalancing, rising bond yields, and elevated oil prices.

A primary growth engine behind ByteDance's surging valuation is its aggressive expansion into artificial intelligence, which has proceeded despite persistent U.S. government regulatory scrutiny surrounding TikTok. ByteDance has launched flagship AI offerings, including the Doubao chatbot and the Seedance video generation tool. Analysts highlight ByteDance's ability to capitalize on vast user data across its consumer platforms to train its AI models. Market estimates of ByteDance's overall company valuation vary, ranging from $268 billion during a 2023 share buyback to $550 billion implied by a stake sale proposal from General Atlantic.

Zhang's milestone is seen by market observers as symbolic of a broader structural shift in wealth creation across Asia, transitioning from traditional infrastructure and energy conglomerates toward young tech entrepreneurs rooted in AI and platform software. However, key risk factors remain: competition within China's domestic AI landscape is intensifying, and ByteDance's massive capital expenditures on AI development have recently contributed to a decline in its net profit.
