June tourist arrivals on the up: 16.2% growth during first six months of 2016

Tourist arrivals into Sri Lanka 964,267 during the first six months of 2016, which is a growth of 16.2 per cent when compared against the same period of last year, reveal latest statistics.

Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority recently released its latest data according to which 118,038 tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka during June 2016. This is a 2.2 per cent growth compared to the same period in 2015.

While there has been a drop in tourist arrivals from the Middle East, Pakistan, the Maldives, Malaysia and Indonesia in June, it could be noted that this trend would have been mainly due to the holy month of Ramazan where Muslims worldwide fast during the day for a month.

Against this back drop, tourist arrivals from the Middle Eastern region dropped by 58.2 per cent while arrivals from Saudi Arabia has dropped by 82.8 per cent, United Arab Emirates by 69.2 per cent, Oman by 86.2 per cent and Kuwait by 36.9 per cent.

Overall, the region-wise tourist arrivals during January to June 2016 are 16.5 per cent from North America, 18 per cent from Western Europe, 7.8 per cent from Eastern Europe, 1.9 per cent from the Middle East, 22.1 per cent from Eastern Asia, 15.2 per cent from South Asia and 15.7 per cent from Australasia.
