Intel ISEF finalist Yasith Lokuge wins mBillionth award in India

Yasith Kanchana Lokuge who represented Sri Lanka at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) has won the ‘Best m-Education & Learning’ award at the mBillionth Awards South Asia 2014 at the Indian Habitat Center in New Delhi, India.

Yasith was a member of the team who represented Sri Lanka for the first time at the Intel ISEF in 2008 which took place in Atlanta, USA. After wining the coveted ‘Junior Inventor of the Year’ award in 2007 from the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka, Yasith was chosen to represent Sri Lanka at the Intel ISEF to showcase his invention called ‘Retractable Safety Staircase’.

His mobile application ‘Sipsala’ was judged the best mobile application in the m-education and learning category. ‘Sipsala’ is an e-mobile educational application which focuses on children in primary and secondary schools in Sri Lanka.

Commenting about his latest award, Yasith said, “It's with humble pride that I accept the mBillionth award for the best m-education and learning application in the South Asian region. It is an honour for me to represent my country in the global stage and bring glory to Sri Lanka.”

Yasith said that Intel ISEF competition created a strong platform for him to compete and to represent Sri Lanka at an international level.

“The international exposure and the experience I took form the ISEF helped me to get to where I am today,” said Yasith.

mBillionth Award South Asia 2014 was held in India for the fifth consecutive year. Organized by the Digital Empowerment Foundation, mBillionth Award is a dedicated platform to explore the latent potential of mobile and telecom sector across eight countries in South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Yasith has his own company called ‘TechSurge’ which specializes in areas like software development, robotics, web development and computer-aided design (CAD).
