The gentle rhythms of ‘Avurudu’ came alive in a uniquely meaningful way this year at La Serena, where residents of the beachfront retirement resort gathered to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in a spirit of warmth, companionship and shared joy.

Set against a backdrop of sea breeze and sunshine, the festivities brought together the resort’s close-knit community of 30 residents, occupying 26 units, in a celebration that was as much about tradition as it was about togetherness. The occasion saw residents enthusiastically participating in customary Avurudu rituals and games, rekindling cherished memories while creating new ones in the company of friends who have become like family.

Laughter and light-hearted competition marked the day’s activities, reflecting not only the enduring appeal of these time-honoured customs, but also the vibrant social life that defines La Serena. The celebrations highlighted the strong sense of camaraderie among residents, underscoring the resort’s ethos of fostering emotionally fulfilling and socially engaged ageing.

Owned and operated by Serene Resorts Limited, a subsidiary of Ceylinco Life Insurance Limited, La Serena has steadily built a reputation as a trusted provider of secure and dignified assisted retirement living in Sri Lanka. The resort offers a carefully balanced environment that supports both independent living and varying degrees of assisted care, enabling residents to enjoy life on their own terms while having access to support when needed.

Purpose-built as a beachfront facility in Uswetakeiyawa, just north of Colombo, La Serena combines the privacy of individual living spaces with the benefits of a shared community. Residents have access to a range of thoughtfully designed amenities, including a swimming pool, library and reading room, common lounge, mini gym and jogging path, all of which encourage an active and engaged lifestyle.

Each living unit is designed for comfort and convenience, with private living and dining areas, kitchenettes, en-suite bathrooms, and modern connectivity features. Additional services such as dining, housekeeping, laundry and round-the-clock security further enhance the ease of living at the resort.

Importantly, La Serena also offers flexible assisted living options tailored to individual needs, from modifications that enhance mobility and safety, to dedicated live-in assistance for daily activities, ensuring that residents can transition seamlessly as their requirements evolve.

The Avurudu celebrations this year served as a vivid reminder that life at La Serena is not defined by age, but enriched by connection, care and a sense of belonging. As the resort continues to grow its community, it stands as a compelling example of how retirement living can be both secure and deeply fulfilling, in a place where traditions are honoured, friendships flourish, and every season of life is embraced with dignity and joy.
