Rhino Roofing Products Limited, the pioneering roofing sheet manufacturer and the largest player in the roofing sheet industry in Sri Lanka, as a part of their ongoing CSR initiatives made a donation of roofing sheets worth more than 1 million rupees to the restoration project at the Welikada Prisons Complex. The donation was handed over to Prisons Commissioner Nishan Chandrajith Dhanasinghe at a special ceremony held at the Colombo Remand Prison premises.

The event was attended by Managing Director of Rhino Roofing Products Limited Jeyaseelan Gnanam, along with Director Jude Fernando, Chief Financial Officer Manoj Weeraman, and Marketing Manager Priyantha Jayasinghe. The event was also attended by Prisons Commissioner Nishan Chandrajith Dhanasinghe, Prisons Commissioner for Rehabilitation Gamini Jayasinghe, Chairman of Welfare Association of Prison Kanchana Eric Sinharage and officials from the prisons department.

Speaking at the occasion Marketing Manager of Rhino Roofing Products Limited Priyantha Jayasinghe noted, as a socially responsible organization we pay special attention to giving back to society.  When we make our annual budgets we allocate funds for a worthy cause in sectors such as Health, Education, and Environment and in disaster situations such as Cyclones, Droughts, and Floods etc. Eleven years back when the Tsunami hit and thousands of our brothers and sisters lost their lives, their loved ones and all their possessions, we as a company offered them a helping hand to give a little hope with a contribution of over 30 million rupees invested in a housing project in Matara. This was as a result of a praiseworthy intention of our Late Chairman, Deshamanya A Y S Gnanam. Thus our CSR projects happen within and outside Government Departments as necessary. This initiative with the prisons department is another attempt to support government authorities with social welfare projects that are being carried out. Through this worthy cause, we make it an occasion to remind our society that the prisoners too are human beings.”

The roofing sheets worth 1 million rupees are to be used for the restoration and reconstruction of the Children’s hostel, Women’s hostel and officer’s quarters within the CRP premises. Colour coated fibre cement roofing sheets were also included for the reconstruction of the “Budu Medura” within the premises.

Commenting at the ceremony Prisons Commissioner Nishan Chandrajith Dhanasinghe also said, “The Prisons Department is very thankful to private companies such as Rhino Roofing for coming forward to support our restoration and rehabilitation projects. It is imperative that a public private partnership takes place to see that not only prison inmates but the officers in charge of their welfare are also taken care of. As the newly appointed prisons commissioner this is one of my biggest concerns and I am indeed glad that Mr.Gnanam and his companies have come forward to support our cause.”
