SLT‑MOBITEL, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, & Tourism, has officially launched the Lankakonect mobile application. Unveiled recently at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, the app represents a significant breakthrough in the nation’s digital transformation journey. Acting as a complaint management platform for Sri Lankans living and working abroad, the Lankakonet app eases their ability to raise and track grievances with the relevant authorities.
Developed by SLT-MOBITEL for the Ministry’s Consular Affairs Division and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), the app offers Sri Lankan overseas citizens and migrant workers worldwide a secure platform to register, submit, and track complaints covering employment contract violations, abuse, unpaid wages, the whereabouts of loved ones, and other concerns in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
By moving the process online, the Lankakonect app removes long waits and unnecessary travel, allowing grievances to be raised anywhere, at any time. Domestic workers, ranking high among the most vulnerable, can escalate urgent concerns immediately. Upon lodging a complaint, officials from the SLBFE and Consular Affairs Division can access the system online and beginning working to resolve issues on behalf of the petitioner. Each complaint can be tracked in real time through its full lifecycle, providing users live updates, with management viewing progress. Furthermore, it allows the Ministry to offer a holistic view of the complaint resolution’s progress.
The launch was graced by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment. International partners, including the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO), which supported the initiative as a Technical Partner, were also present. The project builds on the preceding digital efforts of the Kuwait Embassy whose advanced client management system enhanced the convenience and efficiency of services for expatriates visiting the Embassy. Powered by SLT-MOBITEL, Lankakonect stands as a parallel digital transformation, establishing a national platform that extends this innovation to citizens worldwide.
In 2025, Sri Lankan overseas workers contributed a record USD 8.07 billion in remittances to the national economy, highlighting the vital role they play in sustaining families, strengthening communities, and powering the country’s development. The app is designed to honour their contributions and keep them connected to their motherland, wherever they may be.
Through the Lankakonect app, SLT‑MOBITEL has reaffirmed its commitment to the government’s vision of a fully digitised Sri Lanka where technology signifies progress in service of the people.
The launch at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs signals Sri Lanka’s broader push to bring overseas mission services online, strengthening ties between embassies and expatriate communities, and reinforcing national identity and belonging for every Sri Lankan abroad.
