Sri Lanka’s ‘Retail Queen’ – Otara resigns from Singer Sri Lanka board

Otara Gunewardene who serves as a non-Executive Independent Director of the Singer Sri Lanka board has tendered her resignation from the board of directors which will be effective from 31 December 2019.

In a stock exchange filing on Thursday the company said that she does not have any relevant interests in shares of the Company as specified in the listing rules as at date.

Otara joined the board on the 01 August 2018 as a Non-Executive Director, becoming the first female director in history on the Singer Sri Lanka PLC Board.

Otara rose to fame as Sri Lanka’s leading female entrepreneur, fashion icon and philanthropist and her lifestyle store, Odel, became renown throughout Asia as a top retailer.

In February 2010 she converted ODEL into a public limited liability company and it became the first fashion retail business to be listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange.

On 11 September 2014 Gunewardene sold of all her shares in ODEL PLC to the Softlogic Group, to concentrate on Embark.
