US Government may blacklist DJI and Hikvision as well

It looks like the US Government is planning to blacklist two of China’s biggest companies soon. In a report published by The New York Times, unnamed sources claimed that the US is considering to blacklist China’s surveillance company, Hikvision. DJI, on the other hand, said they can’t predict the future and the best they can do is observe the ongoing negotiations.

The New York Times report mentioned that The US Commerce Department may require US companies to obtain government approval to sell components to Hikvision thus limiting their ability to access key technology for its business. While the report doesn’t mention anything about DJI, the drone manufacturer has taken the world by storm in the past couple of years. According to a report, 80% of the total drones in the US and Canada are manufactured by DJI. Earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security briefed American companies about the inherent security risks associated with Chinese-made drones. Though they didn’t point fingers at anyone, it was clear that they were talking about DJI.

Hikvision has noted that if they are put on the Entity List, they won’t have much impact since they source materials from other South Asian countries as well. That said, the company said it expects to be treated fairly since it hasn’t breached any of the security regulations. The US government is currently negotiating with the Chinese counterparts and we do expect this trade ban to be lifted soon.
