Welcome to the ‘Diyatha Station’ at Waters Edge

February, 26, 2018

Colombo’s fastest growing culinary and entertainment hub Waters Edge recently opened doors to the latest addition to its culinary prowess in a novel way. The “Diyatha Station” is Sri Lanka’s first series of restaurants based inside a train and its carriages. The concept was initiated under the patronage of Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka, Chairman of Waters Edge Chamath de Silva and General Manager of Waters Edge Rohan Fernandopulle.

“A combination project of multiple restaurants, sporting facilities and an entertainment hub, the DiyathaStation will no doubt draw multitudes to Waters Edge. As a hospitality giant in the industry, our aim is to innovate and execute novel ideas for both locals and tourists to enjoy. This project is one more stepping stone to achieve this goal”, said Chairman of Waters Edge Chamath de Silva.

The train running along a rail track consisting of several carriages has been converted into kitchens and passenger compartments revamped into restaurants serving up hawker-street style food. The platform beside the railway track will be used as part of the restaurants creating a typical train station atmosphere with the hustle and bustle that is commonplace of a Sri Lankan railway station. Ensuring that the restaurant is accessible to all, food will be affordably priced and made fresh daily. The seating capacity of the restaurants combined will be 200 with the option of indoor and outdoor seating.

Another unique feature will be that guests have to use a ferry to get to the restaurants. The entire experience itself will be one-of-a-kind as guests will need to arrive at the Diyatha Jetty, take the ferry across the picturesque waterworks while enjoying the cool breeze and the scenery surrounding the area, before entering Sri Lanka’s only restaurant inside a train.
“Diyatha Station” will be a part of the iconic “Fantasy Island” theme park that is also being built at Waters Edge. The theme park will feature the “Colombo Eye” Ferris Wheel for which the agreement was signed recently, a water park, bungee jumping and many more land and water based activities.

A sports themed bar will also be a part of the food court where people can walk in and enjoy the latest games on giant screens while sipping their favourite brew. A teen corner with a gaming arcade, pool tables and game board will also ensure entertainment for the entire family.
