Wickramarachchi Hearing Care hosts Audiology Exhibition

June, 16, 2015

At some point of our lives, we have all come across someone who complains about their ability to hear. But have you tried to guess how many people around the world are suffering with the same problem? The prevalence is quite alarming. Approximately 360 million people around the world suffer from hearing loss, of which 91% are adults and the balance 9% are children. According to a World Health Organization study done in 2012, the greatest of these numbers are in South Asia, Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa. Clearly handicapping some people and only a mild concern for others, hearing loss is definitely as common as most other medical conditions.

Another common medical condition that most adults experience is “vertigo” (dizziness or a sense of imbalance and spinning), which is due to a problem with the balance organ situated in the inner ear. Hearing loss and vertigo are both related to the ear and the assessment and management of such conditions is now available is Sri Lanka.

Understanding this growing medical need Wickramarachchi Hearing Care exhibited state-of-the-art technological innovations in hearing care on the 23rd and 24th of May 2015 to a multitude of doctors, related hearing care professionals and the general public. Hosted at the Wickramarachchi Hearing Care Center at Ward Place, Colombo 7, the exhibition emphasized on this medical condition that is alarmingly common.

Speaking on the exhibition, CEO of the Wickramarachchi Hearing Care Center Mihira Wickramarachchi noted, “This exhibition was a stepping stone towards educating and creating awareness towards hearing and balance disorders and detailing on assessment, diagnosis and treatment procedures. It is the first of many that we hope to have in the future.”

He added, “You don't know what you miss when you can't hear. A baby's first words, the footsteps of an infant and the pitter patter of the rain are just some of it. Hearing loss means the inability to follow and maintain a simple conversation. Modern medical science has advanced so radically, that a child born without the ability to hear, can not only begin hearing, but also start speaking while an adult who has lost all hope of hearing again can be fitted with hearing aids to hear even the softest of sounds. At the Wickramarachchi Hearing Care Center we are able to do all this and more.”

The Wickramarachchi Hearing Care Center is the only audiology clinic in Sri Lanka with state-of-the-art equipment under one roof including calibration devices for each piece of equipment.
