July, 5, 2017

The location of the land on which the estimated two billion US dollar project ‘The World Capital Centre’ complex for which an agreement had been signed recently with the Sri Lanka Board of Investments, has reportedly been not earmarked so far.

A spokesman for ‘The World Capital Centre’ said the land for this project is yet to be chosen and that several locations were being inspected. The spokesman added that the government has taken steps to demolish the buildings on land within the Welikada Prisons complex and the Dematagoda Railway quarters etc. Hence, land to the extent of 69 acres is available at Welikada Prisons area, 35 acres at the Dematagoda Railway quarters and another 14 acres at Peliyagoda. He said the location for this project would be chosen from among them later.

Meanwhile, at the media conference to announce Cabinet decisions held today (05 July) a journalist questioned whether the government has decided to demolish the buildings on lands such as the Welikada Prisons complex and the Dematagoda Railway quarters, joint-Cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that such decisions on land of commercial value like the Welikada Prisons complex, had been taken by the government in 2002.

However, a location having not been decided upon when signing an agreement with the Board of Investments for such a huge project of this nature raises major issues over such projects.
